BIO 2020

Neville Mars is a Dutch architect and planner and principal of MARS Architects, Shanghai, an award winning design studio with twenty years of experience in Asia and buildings realized in Europe and Central America. MARS Architects has a strong focus on sustainable planning and has developed over a dozen integrated planning projects across Asia, including the Sino-Dutch Ecocity in Shenzhen, the Beijing 798 Art District, strategy vision United Mumbai, the comprehensive land use plan of Tacloban for UN-Habitat in the Philippines, and the strategic masterplan of Sustainable Pudong 2040. Recent projects include the winning masterplan for a new town in Wuhan and the sustainable master plan of an IT district in Chengdu. For the coming year MARS has been commissioned a regional planning and low impact development project for Central Java and Borobudur. The www.Metrojava2045.org project uses big data the objective is to re-conceptualise Java’s dense desakota landscape and mediate between top-down national planning projects and bottom-up village level incentives. Results to be presented in August 2022 at the World Planning Forum in Bali.

Dr. Mars is the director of the Dynamic City Foundation (DCF), a non-profit research platform investigating rapid urbanization in Asia. Working across scales and disciplines DCF produces projects such as the research exhibition “Social Mobility” with 2x4 NY, which aim to bridge the gap between urban theory and practice. Recently, DCF has delivered a comprehensive policy study for the Circular Development of Shanghai.

Mars is the author of the book The Chinese Dream - a society under construction (010 Publishers, N. Mars, A. Hornsby, R’dam 2008). This multifaceted tome on Chinese urbanization is said to have inspired the central theme (中国梦 the Chinese Dream) of the twelve Five Year Plan, three years later. Mars has a PhD from RMIT, graduated on topic of urban evolution. He is a lecturer at the China Academy of Art, a BMW Guggenheim Lab fellow, INK fellow, and guest editor of Urban China magazine. Neville Mars has recently been appointed as one of the lead curators of the Xi’An Bi-City Biennale 2021. Coming year Mars will publish his third book "Manifesto of Mistakes - urban solutions for the new world", this ecocity manual rethinks the fundamental principles of the urban discipline, to arrive at a site-sensitive and process-driven urbanism.

Neville Mars is the principal of MARS Architects Shanghai and director of the urban research platform Dynamic City Foundation. MARS is an award winning firm focussed on sustainable public buildings and ecocities across Asia, including the Sino-Dutch Ecocity in Shenzhen, Beijing 798, Caofeidian Ecocity, and United Mumbai for the BMW_Guggenheim. MARS has been invited by UN HABITAT to produce the masterplan for Tacloban, the city ravaged by super typhoon Haiyan. Mars is the author of the book The Chinese Dream - a society under construction (010 Publishers, 2008) and the upcoming book on planning ecocities Manifesto of Mistakes

The Dynamic City Foundation (DCF) 动态城市基金会

For eight years The Dynamic City Foundation has been active in China operating within a unique multi-disciplinairy framework. Specializing in design research of green solutions for fast changing urban environments, the Dynamic City Foundation manifests its findings in a range of media form publications to buildings to large artistic interventions. It dismantles long-term observations, spatial concepts, urban theory, and ideas along all lines to create tangible works of art. DCF is uniquely future-focused, and scientific about its imaginings at a time when closed-circuit televisions patrol streets, where deterritorialized space extends beyond nationhood, and in which urban sprawl spills beyond borders, requiring cultural, physical, and virtual space to be woven together densely as a synthetic mesh. Regarding Chinese cities not only as enormous, chaotic organisms, but as laboratories for global forces, DCF provides refreshing insights in an era of dangerous flash urbanization, in which there is no time to imagine a long-term future.

De laatste tien jaar werk van Neville Mars kenmerken zich door een uitgesproken stedelijk visie gepresenteerd in een scala aan verschillende media. De projecten lopen uiteen van architectuur, stedenbouw, documentaires, tot interactieve en video installaties en stedebouwkundig onderzoek. Zijn werk is veelvuldig gepubliceerd, gepresenteerd in lezingen aan verschillende universiteiten en tentoongesteld op internationale festivals. Vanaf het begin als directeur van de Stichting de Dynamische Stad (DCF - Dynamic City Foundation) in Beijing is een diepgewortelde passie voor de metropool en de stedelijke dynamiek de rode draad die de projecten verbindt.

In 2003 is Neville een grootschalige studie begonnen naar de werking van hyper snelle verstedelijking in China. Dit project onderzoekt hoe binnen de context van een zeer agressieve marktwerking China’s verstedelijking zich kan toespitsen op een duurzame toekomst. In een multidisciplinair team zijn analyses gemaakt die deze realiteit beschrijven. Daarna zijn architectonische en stedebouwkundige ontwerpmodellen ontwikkelt die hierop inspelen. In april 2008 zal uitgeverij 010 onder de titel “The Chinese Dream - a society under construction” het werk publiceren. Maar ook nu zijn de complete projecten te vinden op het platform van de DCF ( http://burb.info )

Momenteel is Neville toegewijd aan de realisatie van duurzame projecten in China en Ecuador; met name de nieuwe stad Caofeidian Ecocity, waarvoor hij een uniek evolutionaire ontwerpmethodiek heeft ontwikkeld, waarbij verschillende bureaus achtereenvolgens bijdragen aan een groeiend stedenbouwkundig plan, dat als zodanig een simulatie van de toekomst voortbrengt met een organische kwaliteit.

Achtergrond DCF

MARS architects is een architectenbureau met een hoofdkantoor in Shanghai. Het bureau staat onder leiding van de Nederlandse architect Neville Mars en staat bekend om een bijzonder multi-disciplinaire benadering. Het werk van de DCF is hierdoor zeer breed en doorkruist de schaalniveaus van stedebouwkundige plannen tot productontwikkeling. De door de DCF ontwikkelde aanpak is sterk onderzoeksgedreven, met een bijzondere aandacht voor gebruikersonderzoek en efficiëntievraagstukken op het gebied van stedelijke programmering en openbaar vervoer en wegverkeer. Het onderzoek is breed gepubliceerd en wordt met hoge regelmaat gepresenteerd in lezingen aan universiteiten over de hele wereld. Interieurs, woningen, meubels en stedebouwkundige plannen zijn gerealiseerd in drie continenten.

Met name de laatste vijf jaar heeft de MARS architects zich gespecialiseerd in duurzame oplossingen. Hierbij zijn theoretische inzichten en technisch onderzoek op een waardevolle manier samengekomen om de basis te vormen van een aanpak die tot op fundamenteel niveau de duurzaamheidsproblematiek benadert. Meer dan simpelweg toepassen van enkele duurzame of energiezuinige technieken richten we ons op het ontwerpen we geïntegreerde systemen die de gebruiker aanmoedigt en helpt ecologisch verantwoord te handelen.
