Smarter cities
City management services : Through better information sharing, among agencies and with the public, city leaders can line up priorities and resources more effectively, and better transparency and visibility can help increase public trust.
Smarter buildings, government and public safety solutions

Infrastructure services
Cities consume 75 percent of the world's energy, drivers spend the equivalent of five days a year in traffic, and infrastructure leaks waste millions of gallons of water each day. IBM offers solutions that can reduce expenses by optimizing infrastructure processes, and increase sustainability by reducing waste and consumption.
Smarter Energy, water and transportation solutions

Human services
Budget crunches, lack of communication among agencies, fraud, and risk and compliance issues are just some of the challenges city governments face. IBM solutions use analytics and other technologies to help personalize programs, customize learning and optimize resource allocations for social services, citizen health and education.

Smart sensor Network

Some cases studies of existing applications around the world :
Smarter transportation system : Singapore CS
Singapore has created one of the most modern, affordable and heavily used public transport networks in the world, with nearly three million people riding the bus and 1,600,000 people riding the train on any given day. To allow more card issuers (providers) to issue cards for use in Singapore's public transit system, thus giving commuters more choice and a unified payment system for transport.
-Card readers capture rider information at all points within the LTA network
-Flexible, open middleware is used to create a single national fare processing clearinghouse.
-Gaining insights into rider travel patterns enables optimization of fare and schedule structures to promote maximum transport utilization.

Smarter buildings solutions : IBM Intelligent Building Management, New Orleans
-Collect energy and operational metrics into a central repository for enterprise-wide analytical and optimization capabilityCentralize real-time events for consolidation, correlation and to initiate actions (e.g service requests)
-Initiate work orders for anomalies detected from application of analytical rules based on energy and operational data
-Get a single, role-based dashboard view of the building data to visualize energy, environmental and portfolio performance metrics
-View historical data to compare trends and identify corrective action
-Create future scenarios for better planning with predictive analyses

Smarter tax management : NY State Tax CS
Got smarter by integrating predictive modeling, adapting their workflows and incorporating new sources of data in real time.
-As tax forms are processed, their information elements are run in real-time against experience-based screening algorithms.
-Leverages information from across the department including taxpayers' past interactions, data on businesses and employees, and data from other internal silos
-Through predictive modeling—employing continuously adapted screening rules—NYS Tax can identify questionable refund requests with a high degree of accuracy, stopping checks before they go out the door.

Smarter commerce : Sun World International CS
At the core is an advanced analytics capability that enables Sun World to optimize nearly every aspect of its operations, from planting and harvest to storage and distribution. On the basis of the insights it generates, Sun World is reducing costs, increasing yields and focusing on its most profitable opportunities.
Highly granular sales and cost data is fed in real time.
Farm managers in the field can access reports from wireless devices, enabling them to take immediate action in the event of abnormalities.
Advanced analytics enables Sun World to pinpoint best practices around irrigation and fertilizing and apply those practices where it makes most sense.

Smarter public safety : Memphis PD CS : The parameters of smarter law enforcement
-Blue CRUSH (Criminal Reduction Utilizing Statistical History) relies on direct feeds from the MPD’s records management system and numerous other reports and sources.
-It integrates robust statistical modeling and analysis with GIS to provide MPD with highly actionable information.
-Granular tracking crime of crime patterns enables MPD to predict future crime hot spots and direct police resources there proactively

30% reduction in serious crime overall, 15% reduction in violent crime, 4x increase in the share of cases solved

Smarter transportation : Guangzhou Metro CS
GM deploys an integrated asset management solution flexible enough to track assets across the lifecycle. It has the means to conduct predictive maintenance of its fast-growing assets—before breakdowns occur—ensuring a smoother, safer and more reliable experience for its two million riders.
-Every asset in Guangzhou Metro’s network is tracked over its entire lifespan, including servicing guidelines and service history.
-Integration of asset management with key enterprise functions improves decision-making and process optimization.
-Performing maintenance on a predictive basis extends the life of assets, improves uptime and supports a rapidly growing passenger base.

Smarter traffic : Stockholm CS
To make the charging system work, the SNRA and the city had to find a way to recognize, charge and receive payment from vehicles. With help from IBM and its partners, a plan was devised to charge vehicles as they passed control points on the way in or out of the Stockholm city center during weekday, rush hour times. The city implemented a free-flow roadside system using laser, camera and systems technology to seamlessly detect, identify and charge vehicles. In the plan, 18 roadside control points located at Stockholm city entrances and exits identify and charge vehicles depending on the time of the day. The tax per passage was SEK 10, 15 or 20 (about $1.50 to $3.00) depending on the time of day. The highest amount charged was during rush hours, from 7:30 to 8:29 a.m. and 4:00 to 5:29 p.m. The maximum amount per vehicle and day was SEK 60, or about $8.50.
The road charging system has made a real impact in congestion and overall quality of life for the citizens of Stockholm. By the end of the trial, traffic was down nearly 25 percent. Public transport schedules had to be redesigned because of the increase in speed from reduced congestion. And even inner-city retailers saw a six percent boost in business. and the overall air quality improved from 8-14% in its inner city.
