Global Networks and Megaclusters

The urban networks which influence the daily lives of almost of all of the world’s billions of people are far reaching, complex, international systems allowing for the flows of people, ideas, and capital. However, there are a number of locations where these networks coalesce and tighten, forming megaclusters which attract greater and greater migration and expansion. It is in these megaclusters where individual cities meld together and local boundaries loose their relevance. In 2015, there were at least 6 observable urban megaclusters with a population over 250 million. By 2050, the number of urban clusters with a population of over 250 million will be staggering, as smaller urban areas grow to greater populations.
